It was a
game of two halves for Mary’s they started like winners, taking
the ball into Trojan’s territory for the first ten minutes,
superior in lineout and scrum.
Then the
pendulum swung and Trojans took the ball into Mary’s 22 but
gave away a penalty, allowing Mary’s to clear.Back
in Trojan’s half, a clever, speculative kick towards space
in the corner, looked to give the ball back, but when Trojan’s
clearance was charged down Louise Gainard (L J) grounded in the
right place.
Trojan’s returned the pressure, getting a lineout on the home
side’s five yard line which went Mary’s way but, moving
the ball left across the pitch, Trojan’s got over the line
with a little luck on their side.
Five apiece
at the break with Trojan’s ladies going down injured regularly
and the match seemed made for a home win. If only.
Faster out of the blocks at the start, the visitors soon earned
a scrum on Mary’s five yard line. Cleared by the home team,
but not far enough, Trojans came back for a well earned try. Another
following shortly afterwards with a breakaway from half way.
Mary’s
made five subs in the second half which didn’t tighten up
the teamwork, while Trojan’s got their act together convincingly.
In spite of this the home side were camped in Trojan’s half
at full time, having come excruciatingly close to the line.
A good show for Mary’s, with the learning curve still on an
upward trajectory…
